Avoiding The “Freshman 15” For Community College Students

by Chad Agrawal

Eating right in college isn't always easy.

For many students this has to do with the restrictions of dorm living (namely the lack of a kitchen).

But community college students are lucky in that many are able to continue living with their parents while they're in school.

Even those that must rent an apartment will have access to a kitchen area that features a sink, stove, and fridge (although whether or not they work is a different matter entirely).

In short, community college students should have a much easier time when it comes to preparing healthy vittles.

Unfortunately, there are other stumbling blocks to contend with, such as a lack of time, skill, and motivation.

Most students are so bogged down by community college classes, studying, and jobs that they simply don't have time to cook full, healthy meals.

Or they may not know how to cook anything besides microwave macaroni and cheese.

In truth, many simply have no desire to bother with cooking when it's a lot easier to grab a bag of chips or order a pizza.

But if you want to feel good and perform at peak levels you need to consume proper nutrients.

In addition to the great food recipes and preparations found at Savory Bites, here are just a few healthy eating tips that any college student can easily manage.

Healthy Eating Tips for Community College Students

The first thing you can do is eat fruits and veggies.

You might be worried about preparation, but many fruits require only that you peel them, something that you'd have to do with a candy bar anyway.

And other options need little more than a rinse before you bite into them and start enjoying the benefits of the vitamins, minerals, and fiber they contain.

In addition, the natural sugars in fruits can give you a boost that is far gentler than what you'll find in the caffeinated beverages you suck down like they're going out of style.

Where one coffee drink from Starbucks will set you back five bucks and leave you in a coma an hour later, you can get a bunch of bananas for the same price and avoid the crash that results from caffeine and processed sugars.

And when you pair fruit snacks with protein (like some string cheese, for example), you'll add some slow-burning calories that will keep you energized and alert through an entire class.

But what you really need to sustain yourself during your time in community college or university (and beyond) is a balanced diet that ensures you're getting all of the nutrients you need to thrive.

This will include daily portions of lean meats and animal products (dairy, eggs, etc.), whole grains, and plenty of fruits and veggies.

And if you're having a hard time wrapping your brain around the prospect, try taking a sandwich to campus with you. If you include sliced meats, low-fat cheese, whole grain bread, and veggies like lettuce and tomatoes, you've literally hit every food group.

And that's just one meal!

You might have the best Pennsylvania pizza delivery service on speed dial at this point, but your bad eating habits could become a thing of the past when you embrace eating right in community college.

When you realize how great a healthy diet makes you look, feel, and function on a daily basis, you'll never go back to your old ways (well, maybe on the weekends).

Howdy, There’s no doubt that your web site could possibly be having internet browser compatibility problems. Whenever I take a look at your website in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in IE, it’s got some overlapping issues. I simply wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Apart from that, excellent blog!
