Choosing the Perfect Career for You

by Dan Blinman

Choosing the right career is not an easy thing to do. Whether you are in high school, or looking at a starting a second career, choosing what you are going to do for the next several years can be pretty daunting task. Many people complete university or college courses only to find out when they start working that the job is not as great as they thought it was going to be. Picking a career that you are going to enjoy long term is vital to your success in your field, and ultimately, your happiness.

Many people find it helpful to do a little soul searching, so to speak, before embarking on a career decision. There are several online personality tests that can pick out your interests and skills, and match them to a career that requires those traits. The Myers Briggs personality test is one of the most popular tests out there. It’s free, and doesn’t take too long to complete.

Ask yourself questions. What have you done in the past that you have been passionate about? Do you like working with your hands? Are you interested in helping others? Do you have an analytical or practical mind? What can you really see yourself doing day after day for a long period of time?

It’s really important to know yourself first. If you’re not sure what you like doing, maybe because you have not had too many jobs in the past, you should consider doing some volunteer work. It’s a good way to try out some perspective fields, and ask some questions to the people who work there.

It’s also important to ask for advice from friends and family that know you best. That’s not to say that you have to pick the career that they suggest, but often they may have a few suggestions that you hadn’t thought of. Career councilors can also be a great resource. They are often good at matching personalities with careers, and they may even have networks of employers ready to hire.

Talk to people in the fields that you’re interested in who actually do the work every day. They will have invaluable insight on the pros and cons of the job, and this real world advice may mean the difference between making a decision that you regret, and finding your dream job. You may be surprised how many people are actually willing to talk to you about what they do. Listen to the issues they have and ask yourself if those issues are a fair trade-off for all the benefits. If they are, you will probably have a long happy career ahead of you.
