Whether you’re living at home or staying in a dorm during college, it’s important to have your own space for studying. If you’re at home, you can set up a study area in your bedroom. If you’re staying at school or university, you should have enough room to create at least a small study area in your dorm room. It’s alright if it isn’t big, but it should be comfortable and quiet enough for you to be able to get work done.
1. Furniture
A desk is one of the most essential pieces of furniture you need for a study area. Look for a small one if your space is limited. Ideally, you should have enough room to spread out a few books and a laptop or computer monitor. You can also use a small table if that’s all you have available. Make sure you pick out a comfortable chair, especially if you plan on spending most of your time studying and working on assignments at your desk. Sitting in a chair that’s too hard or doesn’t give you good support can strain your back.
2. Desk Supplies
Keep some basic supplies, such as pens and highlighters, in a desk drawer or in a pen holder. You should also have a supply of paper clips, a stapler, and staples. If your study area includes a printer, make sure you have ink cartridges and paper. A desk calendar can help you keep track of when assignments are due and which days tests are scheduled for.
3. Lighting
A desk lamp provides you with some extra light for reading. If you don’t have room for one on your desk, you can set up a floor lamp next to it or get the type that clips onto your desk instead. Some desk lamps come with holders where you can keep supplies for easy access.
4. Organization
As you go through college, you’ll be getting several textbooks. You might also want to keep printed copies of all the papers you’ll be writing. Make sure you have a good way to keep everything organized. Some desks come with a bookshelf. If yours doesn’t have one, use bookends to keep your books together or a bookcase to store them all. You can also use magazine holders or hanging organizers that can hold thinner textbooks and documents.
5. Computer
With so much studying being done online these days, it’s important for you to have a reliable laptop or computer to use. Keep in mind that you’ll also be using a word processing program to do your papers. You might want to invest in a printer if you have the money and space for one.
Once you have the basic supplies, furniture, and equipment set up in your study area, you can make it look more inviting by adding some decor. Put up some picture frames or keep a few knick knacks on your desk to give your study area a more personal touch.
