For those who possess artistic talents, and have a flair for fashion, a career in the fashion design industry can be a great choice. Although it takes a lot of creativity to be a fashion designer; contrary to what some might think, fashion design is not just about coming up with outrageous outfits for Paris or New York runways. Most schools in Canada offer either a two-year or a four-year degree in fashion design. Only one university in this country offers a master’s degree in fashion design as well as a PhD. Fashion design schools teach fashion sketching, fashion history, computer aided fashion design, color and design theory, textiles, creating patterns, clothing construction, merchandizing, and much more.

Importance of Training

It is important to realize that no matter how creative or talented a person is, getting the proper training is imperative to success in this field. Improving techniques, learning new computer programs and the opportunities to make important contacts in the industry all go a long way in offering advantages to finding work in the field. Most schools which have been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design employ instructors who are professionals in design, as well as merchandizing and marketing; and many of these schools bring in guest instructors to offer a fresh perspective. Being able to get helpful critique from professionals is another very important training aspect.

Career Opportunities

Once a person has obtained a degree in fashion design many opportunities are available in addition to contemporary design. Designing costumes for TV, movies or theaters, jobs as buyers, managers or merchandisers and even self-employment are other possible options.
