Questions You Must Ask Your Military Recruiter

by A Guest Author

Before you consider enlisting, you have to know the right questions to ask. Here are some of the questions you must ask of every military recruiter you speak to.

What is the Minimum Length of Commitment? How Long Will I Be Enlisting for?

Commitments are usually two years at the least. Longer commitments, however, will result in better benefits packages. You’ll ask more about benefits packages later.
Are There Any Special Programs or Bonuses Available to Me?

Sometimes different types of experience or skills will allow you to enter the military at a higher rank than is standard for new recruits. For example, previous ROTC experience may make you eligible for a higher pay grade, so be sure to tell your recruiter about anything you think could be of interest to him.
What is a Qualifying Score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test?

Find out the minimum score you need to receive in order to qualify to enlist. Also find out the qualifying scores for any job specialties you’re interested in, because they may require a higher score.
Can I See Any Brochures or Videos about Military Service?

Your recruiter will most likely have different videos you can watch and literature you can read so that you can learn more about military service and military life. Watch them, but do so with a grain of salt because they are promotional materials after all.
Can You Tell Me About What Boot Camp Will Be Like?

Each branch of the military will have different basic training programs. They vary in length and location. Ask how long boot camp would be and where it’s located, and ask him to describe it in detail for you.
What are the Physical Requirements to Enlist? What are the Standards to Succeed in Boot Camp?
You’ll have to pass a physical exam to qualify for enlistment, so find out what is entailed and what is required in order to pass. Also ask your recruiter to recommend the physical fitness standards you should meet before you leave for boot camp in order to do well.
What Opportunities Will I Have for College?

Find out how much money you’ll receive for college and how you can earn additional funds. Also ask about any college courses or training you’ll be able to receive while you’re on-duty.
What is the Pay Scale Like? How Much, If Any, Will I Be Paid During Basic Training?

There is no simple, standard answer on how much you’ll get paid for enlisting or during basic training. There are lots of different factors, such as how long you’re enlisting for, what your starting rank is, etc.
What are Benefits Packages Like?

Ask about different benefits you’ll be eligible for. Remember that most benefits are negotiable, so don’t be afraid to ask for more before you enlist. Just make sure you get everything in writing before you sign.
What Do I Do Next?

If you’re still interested, ask your recruiter what steps you should take next.
