Why I Laugh When People Hate On Community College

by Chad Agrawal

Why do people hate on community collegeWhen I first started promoting this site back in 2010, I had spent a lot of time on twitter. Unfortunately, if you search for the term "community college" on twitter, there are a lot of people that do hate on community college. Initially, it really bothered me that so many people hate on community college. Then, it became funny to me...

I read a tweet by a freshman girl who said, "If you go to community college, don't f*ckin talk to me. You're stupid and I go to university" or something very similar to that. I took a second to look her up (checking out her twitter profile) and found out that she goes to some no name university.

And that is when I started to laugh. I'm pretty sure 99% of students, if not, everyone at community college was smarter than this girl. They are paying less tuition, saving money by living at home and then will most likely transfer to a university way better than the one she was going to. Not to mention, hundreds of community college students transfer to Ivy League universities every year.

It occurred to me that most people simply are uninformed about the tremendous benefits of going to community college. I think they believe that just because community college is easy to get into, that means it is not valuable. The truth is community colleges offer a fresh start to succeed (at extremely low costs, granting access to opportunity for everyone). If they knew the facts from the start, I believe more people would make a different decision between community college or university.

As for people hating on community college, I don't think that we can stop it all. However, we can all help people to understand how obtaining an associates degree at your local 2 year community college then transferring to UC, NYU, Upenn or even Harvard can be a better path. With the rise of community college honors programs and more students learning about community colleges, hopefully less people will hate on community college and more people will speak out to their benefits.

Do you have any funny stories about students hating on community college? Please leave it in the comments below. Tell us about your reactions or how to better inform people about the advantages of transferring from community college to Ivy League & Tier 1 universities.
