Five Ways Teachers Can Change Your Life

by Lance Williams

It is no secret that children are very impressionable, and the adults in their lives can easily influence them as they grow older into adulthood for themselves. Not only do the parents obviously play a large role here, but the adults that see them nearly as frequently are their teachers, so it is no surprise that teachers can change lives for the better.

Think back to a good memory with a good teacher, whether it was during essay editing or general class time. Some people may remember how teachers took the time to stop and listen to dreams, encourage students to follow them, helping create confidence to get out there and do what their students want to do. Good teachers not only teach their students but also want their students to succeed beyond the classroom and all throughout life.

When a teacher helps encourage a student, they continue to influence their lives beyond school and into the adult world. In a recent study where roughly 367 adults were surveyed, 45 mentioned that their lives would be much different were it not for a certain teacher, and 35 of these individuals said their teacher was directly responsible for leading them to their chosen careers.

The incredible thing about these teachers' influence on their former students is that this influence does not actually have much to do with their teaching skill. Here is a breakdown of the five ways that these teachers, and other teachers, have changed the lives of their students:

Encouragement:

By using sincere, uplifting words, teachers change lives by being encouraging. For example, this can include statements like "I believe in you," "You can do this," "Give it all you have" and more.

Challenge:

Children who are not challenged and have everything handed to them do not grow up with a sense of pride and ambition. Instead of making things easy, an influential teacher provides an extra challenge to their students, raising the bar while knowing exactly how to get their students over its new position and making them better people in the end for it.

Time:

Any teacher can come in to work, teach their students and call it a day at 2:30. On the other hand, influential teachers truly invest in their students, going beyond the call of duty to ensure that their students are succeeding in the class even when it was not school time anymore. Whether it was though getting to know the students personally, helping them with essay editing or assisting them with their studies, teachers who take this extra investment definitely help change their student’s lives.

Support:

Any teacher can assign tasks and allow their students to try and overcome a new challenge, but a truly influential teacher offers his or her support, conveying a true belief in students that they would be able to succeed in their challenges, efforts and dreams. These teachers provide an immeasurable level of support that go beyond simple words of encouragement, creating assignments that help a certain student get through his or her specific needs, through essay editing or by offering tutoring sessions after school to any students who need it.

Care:

Of all the individuals who were surveyed for the study, most stated that they knew their teachers cared for them and cared about how well they performed in their classes and in life. A good, influential teacher always demonstrates respect and care while simply wanting the best for their own students.

Though these were the top five ways mentioned to be how teachers changed their lives, the study participants also mentioned that their teachers were very patient, were kind and all did well to teach with all of their heart while providing an excellent example of how to succeed in life and encouraging a love for learning.
