Paying for Community College in Duct Tape

by A Guest Author

If duct tape is supposed to fix anything, why couldn't it fix your community college tuition cost? Sure, it sounds like a stretch, but it is actually feasible if you have the right scholarship to apply for. For those of you who haven't caught on yet, I'm talking about the Stuck at Prom Scholarship, sponsored by Duck Brand. It's an annual contest that pays high school students up to $5,000 for making prom attire out of duct tape. Sound like something you'd be up for? Great. Keep reading then...

What Is the Duct Tape Scholarship?

The Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest is a program designed to reward creative students who are willing to think totally outside the box. Applicants must apply in pairs, but they are each given prizes between $500 and $5,000. All they have to do is make prom wear mostly out of Duck Brand duct tape, and then take a picture of themselves wearing it at prom. All of the contestants' photos are put on the website for voting, and winners are chosen based on their popularity and the difficulty of their creations.

Most of the winners spend at least 40 hours making their ensembles, but some spend well over 100. It just depends on how complex their outfits are. If you are a high school student with a creative eye though, this could be a great financial aid opportunity for you.

Who Qualifies for the Scholarship?

Applicants must be at least 14 or older to enter the competition, and they must have a partner to apply with. This partner does not have to go to the same high school, but he or she does need to be a high school student. Partners can be of the same sex, as long as they attend prom together. All applicants must provide their own tape for the contest, but the honorable mention winners will get a large set of tape to use for the following year. As long as you are a high school student with plans to attend prom, you can qualify for this award.

What Sets the Winners Apart from the Rest?

Most of the people that end up winning the Stuck at Prom Scholarship make outfits that look like actual fabric. This may include lace, pin-striping, ruffles, flowers, and much more. The details in their outfits far exceed what you might expect for duct tape, and their outfits complement each other in a creative way. If you want to secure a duct tape scholarship for your future, you need to be willing to come up with a great design and commit to it. If you can do that, you can have a good shot at winning an award.
