Student’s Well-Being In The School Environment

by A Guest Author

Kids spend a good deal of their time at school. In order to get a good education and become successful adults, educators must take the time to ensure that students are given the best advantage while learning each day. Computers and mobile devices are generally accepted and used in most educational facilities. Therefore, one factor that needs to be considered regarding every aspect of the school day is ergonomics.

The physical health of students is a major concern with student school environments today. With obesity becoming a major issue in many countries, it only stands to reason that computer time should be limited and that students need time to exercise in order to stay physically fit. While computer games are certainly fun and acceptable, it must be mixed with physical exercise as well.

In addition, sitting at a computer desk without proper support for long periods of time can cause students to develop muscular aches and pains in their backs, necks, wrists and arms. If each student can use an ergonomic computer desk, his or her body will be in the correct alignment and avoid discomfort and pain.

For example, a science teacher may have the students use a computer to research ideas for their science fair projects. It’s very easy for students to spend long hours on such a project. Therefore, the teacher needs to make sure that students have the proper support throughout their school day.

Art teachers use many mediums as they teach and it would be most natural for students to use a computer to do graphic design, study famous artists and learn about various art forms. As the students use their mouse to create various works of art, the instructors should be certain that their students are receiving the ergonomic support that they need. Otherwise, students may begin having problems with carpal tunnel syndrome and other aches and pains.

Additionally, students should be sitting in ergonomic chairs as they work on computers throughout the day. These chairs are adjustable, making it easy for students to adjust the height of the chair so that they are directly facing their computer screens. Also, ergonomic chairs have adjustable backs so that students can get comfortable, regardless of how the previous person had the seat adjusted. Many students can use the same chair throughout the day, each adjusting the chair to their most comfortable and healthiest position.

Teachers should also ensure that their students spend time socializing with others. Sitting at a computer desk is fun and appealing to most students, but does not promote conversation and communication with others. Class discussions and interaction between students should never be replaced by time in front of a computer.

It’s important for educators to maintain balance for their students socially and physically so that they will be socially and physically healthy. The good news is that it’s easy to accomplish all of these things so that every student will be able to enjoy the vast amount of knowledge and information available through the Internet using amazing technological devices.
