According to the Times Higher Education Supplement only two countries have universities in the top 5 in the world. So, what are the pick of the bunch, the cream of the crop and the pinnacle places for education in the world today?

Harvard University

With the best reputation in the world, Harvard University tops the list. Situated in Cambridge Massachusetts in the USA, the university was established in 1636 and currently has an academic staff of 2107 and just over 20,000 students.

The University is made up of eleven academic units, ten of which are faculties. The campus itself is made up of 201 acres and is only four miles from Boston itself.

Eight US Presidents have attended the University and 75 Nobel Laureates and the Library is one of the largest in the world.

 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT is also situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts, however opened in 1861 and has a smaller staff of 1,018.The college has a strong interest in technology and science and was founded as a response to US industrialisation in the 19th century.

The university has had a strong influence on World War Two and Cold War technologies and is also strong in the educational disciplines of physical sciences, economics and political science.  It has 77 Nobel Laureates and 45 Rhodes Scholars.

University of Cambridge

The UK’s top entry in the University rankings was founded in 1209 – a long time ago. It currently has an academic staff of over 5,800 and is the second oldest university in the English speaking world after Oxford.

Cambridge often comes at the top of the University rankings and has around 18,300 students currently many of which are UK immigrants. Graduates of Cambridge University have won 65 Nobel Prizes, which is more than any other educational institution in the world.

Stanford University

The only west coast university on the list, Stanford is the fourth in the list according to the Times Educational Supplement and is the baby of our group having been founded in 1891. With over 1,900 staff it is situated near Palo Alto in California and North West of Silicon Valley.

Stanford is a major university for research into computers, mathematic sciences and engineering and was home to a Linear Accelerator in the 1970s. There are currently over 14,000 students in the University.

Over 50 staff from the University has won the Nobel Prize and it also has the highest number of Turning Prize winners in the world. Graduates from Stanford have founded companies as notable as Cisco, Google, Yahoo, HP and LinkedIn among others.

Oxford University

The oldest English University, Oxford was established before 1096 and is situated in the City of Oxford in the UK.

The University has over 23,000 students and usually contends for first place with Cambridge in the UK university tables. It also consistently is among the top universities in the world. It forms the UK’s Golden Triangle of Universities along with Cambridge and their rivalry comes to a head in the Oxford – Cambridge Boat Race each year.
